Conflating intersex and transgender

Sir, – Joanne O'Riordan introduces cyclist Kristen Worley thusly: "She is an XY female", (Sports, July 8th). Several paragraphs about transgender participation in sports follow before she refers to well-known biologically XY female Caster Semenya.

Whatever the views of The Irish Times on participation of trans women in women’s sports, it is misleading to refer to Worley as an XY female and class her with Semenya.

Worley is a trans woman. Semenya is a woman with a difference of sex development (DSD). It is disrespectful to both Worley and Semenya to class them as biologically the same. – Yours, etc,

ELEANOR DOYLE,
