Sir, - Am I the only reader who was incredulous to read Cardinal Connell's assertion that his guardian angel had saved him from a night-time intruder last year? Where was this wonderful guardian angel when Desmond Connell was putting his now infamous petulancy on the record? Any decent guardian angel worth his salt would have intervened to save the hapless cardinal from the ensuing PR fiasco!
In my view, this latest outburst is a cogent argument in favour of married clergy (and women priests). There's nothing like a good woman to impart the basic commonsense which would have ensured that Cardinal Connell did not make his huffy and resentful remarks on Walton Empey. - Yours, etc.,
