JUSTIN O' FLAHERTY,
Madam, - The recent floods we have seen in Dublin are a cause for serious concern. Many differing opinions exist as to the causes but there is one reason the residents of Drumcondra and Ballybough may be interested in hearing but one that I haven't heard mention to date.
In order to facilitate the construction of the port tunnel the engineers of this project saw fit to close off the Tolka river's exit into Dublin Bay by somewhere in the region of 50 per cent. Quite simply, during the serious flooding the other day the river could not access the bay quick enough. This could have caused the Tolka to back up, eventually causing its banks to burst. Surely this possibility merits investigation.
The port company's application to infill 52 acres of the Dublin Bay is currently been considered by the Minister and this development, if granted will hardly improve the flooding issue. This should be a major concern for all residents around the bay, not just those that have suffered recently. We should all write to the Minister voicing our objections now, before it's too late. - Yours, etc.,
JUSTIN O' FLAHERTY, 282 Clontarf Road, Dublin 3.

Madam, - With respect to the flooded motorways - were the civil engineers who built the new motorways imported from Cavan by any chance? Perhaps we should ask Mr. Kevin Myers to implement a national flood plan....Yours, etc.,
JOHN O'CONNOR, Moira, Co. Down.
