Sir, – James Nix and Hassard Stacpoole have done well to highlight the difficulties associated with the free travel scheme (October 21st). However I am disappointed at the lack of hard evidence adduced in favour of their preferred solution of reintroducing peak time fares. They do not provide nearly enough information to allow a reader form an informed judgment on their proposal. At a minimum we need to know: what are the facts about the capacity problems allegedly caused by the numbers using transport free of charge? What is their extent, their frequency, their timing, duration and location? What proportion of peak-time travellers are free? Is the proportion rising and if so, at what rate? How many extra peak-time trains and buses have to be provided to accommodate free travellers? – Yours, etc,
