Sir, – When I was a young reporter on The Irish Times in the late 1940s I covered a big political meeting at the Parnell monument (Irishman’s Diary, January 24th). Needing a crowd estimate, I asked for a figure from a garda. Having given me a figure, I asked how he reached it. “Simple,” he said, “count the legs and divide by two”. – Yours, etc,
