Sir, - "Mystery surrounds the cause of the road accident which claimed the lives of three women pedestrians in Co. Laois yesterday", your reporter writes (February 22nd). There is no mystery. As everyone who lives in rural Ireland knows too well the country roads are unsafe to walk. If paths are considered necessary in towns, how can it be that they are considered unnecessary in the countryside? If anything they are more important. Many country roads are narrow and winding and cars travel faster than they do in urban areas. We take our lives in our hands every time we try to enjoy the pleasure of a walk. - Yours, etc.,
John McCarthy, Shillelagh, Co Wicklow.
