Sir, – After the Taoiseach’s announcement on Tuesday, I was struck by the deadlines the Government imposes on wider society, and those that they set for themselves.
For the wider public: mandated working from home begins on Friday; a curfew for hospitality starts at midnight on Thursday; restricted movements for household contacts are “effective immediately”.
For the Government: they are “planning to extend” rapid testing to schools; proposals for subsidised antigen tests will be presented “very shortly”; and two weeks after boosters were approved for 60-somethings, the HSE is “finalising an operational plan”.
Life generally works better when we expect more from ourselves than from others. In the Government’s case, I guess not.
– Yours, etc,
EAMONN DELANEY
