Crisis In Health Services

Sir, - I wish to endorse the theme of Sandra Morton (February 16th) on the current crisis in Irish Health Service.

Sir, - I wish to endorse the theme of Sandra Morton (February 16th) on the current crisis in Irish Health Service.

For far too long it has been "covered up" that ward closures, postponed surgery and unacceptable patient waiting lists are directly attributed to nurse shortages in hospitals. Why are nurses leaving the country and the profession in droves? Until such time as governing bodies and healthcare organisations recognise that their people are the most important asset, I have no vision for the future of nursing in Ireland or the integrity of the healthcare service.

"Investment in equipment depreciates while investment in people appreciates." This remark by Sir Brian Wolfson, captures what we should be striving for in the healthcare service here. May I take this opportunity to wish Sandra Morton bon voyage as she heads off to Dubai. I hope she will be a more valued "commodity" there and reap the benefits of recognition, thanks and money. - Yours, etc., Lorna Hampson,

Kilmainham, Dublin 8.
