Sir, - I agree with Kevin Myers (An Irishman's Diary, July 17th) that it is an "idiocy" to believe that the divisions of Northern Ireland can "be solved by some miraculous, all inclusive remedy".
The most fundamental fact about Northern Ireland is that it is inherently unsuited to the restoration of a single unit of devolved government. Every initiative in the past 30 years has been based and has foundered upon the notion that Stormont is the cure to our ailments. When will we learn that Stormont, regardless of checks and balances, won't work?
Northern Irish politics is communal - Protestant versus Catholic. It is a triumph of hope over experience that restoring Stormont will be anything but a stimulus to sectarian antagonism. Stormont will only ever restore the politics of the bear-pit, with all the attendant consequences flowing onto the street.
Now is the time to look seriously at the Agreement, and to salvage from it as many elements as possible. The Stormont Executive and Assembly however, are elements best cast to the winds. - Yours, etc.,
Cllr Mark Langhammer (Ind Labour), Newtownabbey Borough Council, Co Antrim.
