Sir, - As I sat at my table in Virginia and read your Editorial "Time for Adams to Deliver" (June 27th) on the Web, I was deeply saddened.

Across the US, and in other democracies around the world, people have watched hopefully as the will of the people of Ireland, North and South, for the creation of a non-violent civil society was overwhelmingly expressed by their referendum votes three years ago. Probably, hope for the triumph of the democratic process is even more keenly felt in countries where people still hold to the dream that oppression will one day give way to the transforming power of the vote.

South Africa has set for the world a profound example of peaceful democratic social transformation. The people of Northern Ireland have also started this vital process, refusing to be held hostage any longer by fear and hatred. Those few who hold the key must now find the courage to keep their word, and hold to this process. The rest of the world watches and prays. - Yours, etc.,
