Madam, - Question: If all our commercial vehicles carry current Department of Transport road worthiness certificates and are therefore in the best of health when leaving our ports for the UK, why are up to 55 per cent found to be in breach of safety standards, quite similar to ours, when they are stopped and checked over there (Motors, March 14th)?
Perhaps the Minister for Transport, Mr M. Cullen, possibly decked out in driver mode, should smuggle himself aboard one of the ferries plying to UK ports and see for himself what might be happening to all those fine lorries during the brief voyage to leave them so obviously unfit and in breach of normal safety regulations when they land on the other side. - Yours, etc,
ARTHUR DUNNE, Blackrock, Co Dublin.
