Sir, - Commuters to Dublin using train stations between Howth and Drogheda may be interested to know that, according to Irish Rail, there will not be any increase in passenger capacity on the Drogheda line for at least two years.
Even then it only be possible only to extend the present six-carriage trains to eight carriages. There are no plans to increase the frequency of service.
In view of the thousands of people moving to East Meath and Drogheda (on the basis that they will be able to commute by train to Dublin), this is very worrying. These commuter trains are already full long before they reachtheir destinations. The crush which will soon be a daily occurrence, in both directions, is a frightening prospect.
What a pity Meath County Council and Drogheda Corporation did not consider these details before granting planning permission for large-scale residential developments. - Yours, etc.,
Laura Cullen, Mornington, Co Meath.
