Sir, - Your report concerning the position adopted by the American Association for World Health regarding the US blockade of Cuba (March 5th) is another indication of the concern being expressed by doctors and medical organisations throughout the world at the effects of the blockade on the Cuban people. More and more, the US blockade is recognised as a deliberate attack on the basic human rights of the Cuban people, depriving them of food, medicines and basic necessities.

Doctors in Ireland have responded to the shortages caused by the blockade by contributing medicines and medical equipment to health facilities in Cuba. Among the Irish medical profession, there is a growing understanding not only of the hardships caused by the blockade but also a recognition of the success of the Cuban health system in providing services to the population.

The US should bow to world opinion and end this illegal blockade immediately. Until that happens, we call on Irish health and education practitioners to show their support, in any way possible, for the right of the Cuban people to adequate health and education services, free of obstruction and interference from the United States. - Yours, etc.,
