Sir, - At 10.45 a.m. on Tuesday, April 27th I was working in the garden and to my utter amazement I heard a cuckoo calling within six metres of where I was. At first I thought it might be someone impersonating a bird. However, it was in the trees above me where pigeons have built their nests.
In 37 years of living here and creating the gardens we have never been so honoured. Imagine the amazement on the faces of a group of avid gardeners who were visiting here 20 minutes later who also heard the bird.
Foxes in suburbia are commonplace but a cuckoo is a rarity.
