Madam, - Yesterday evening [July 3rd] I attended the relaunch of Gay Community News and had to endure one of the self-proclaimed leaders of our "gay community" unoriginally attempt to establish common cause between homosexuals, a minority, and the physically disabled, another minority.
This is insulting to both. Being gay is not a disability and gay men and women have redress through rights-based legislation while the disabled communities do not. It is time the gay community shed the cloak of victimhood that it wears so well and looked to the future rather than to the past. If members of the gay community wish to further the cause of the disabled communities they would do better to press for the same sort of progressive legislative change that they themselves benefited from 10 years ago. - Yours, etc.,
PAUL CARON, Heytesbury Street, Dublin 8.
