Madam, – Joan Timoney (March 4th) writes that the Government should take steps to curb union industrial action, which she feels might be in breach of the Constitution.
It should be pointed out that Irish trade unions have among the weakest constitutional and legislative protections in the entire western world. When dismissed workers in the 21st century are driven to go on hunger strike, partly because their employer refuses to speak to the trade union they wish to represent them, one has to wonder exactly whose constitutional rights are being neglected? – Yours, etc,
