A chara, - I was shocked to read that the Government has cut the budget of Foras Na Gaeilge, leading it to reduce grants to other Irish-language organisations by 10 per cent (The Irish Times, February 19th). I believe this shows an unwillingness to truly develop and encourage the use of the Irish language in today's society.

I also think that the proposed tax on the "Bean an tí" is unacceptable. These women, who spend their summers looking after students, are not exactly earning big money from doing this job. Taxing them could mean that many may not feel it worthwhile to continue providing this service, thus leading to the closures of some of the Gaeltacht colleges.

As a sixth year student I know that I have gained more fluency in the language after five years attending the Gaeltacht during the summer than after 14 years in the education system. I believe that the majority of people my age would agree with me. - Is mise,
