Madam, – In the current economic crisis it is vital that public sector workers in state and semi-state employment take a pay cut. By this I mean we doctors, nurses, teachers, gardaí, civil servants and semi-state employees, such as ESB workers.
We are not stupid. By nature we are cautious and conscientious people who understand only too well the current situation. We are light years ahead of the “not-an -inch” mentality of Jack O’Connor of Siptu and Liam Doran of the INO. We want a future for ourselves and our children and are only too well aware of the job threats to our relations, friends, and neighbours in the factory down the road.
Thankfully, we live in a free society so those of us who have long-term job security and aren’t willing to accept a decrease in pay may resign their positions. – Yours, etc,
Dr ADRIAN HONAN,
Portarlington, Co Laois.
