Madam, - The comment by a spokesperson for the Catholic hierarchy that a reduction in VAT on condoms is "contrary to the common good" and "promotes promiscuity" is frighteningly backward (The Irish Times, January 31st). Members of any religion are free to make their own decisions on using, or not using, contraceptives. Thankfully, though, the moral monopoly of Church teaching on social policy is on the wane and the State is beginning to realise the crucial benefits of safe sex in public healthcare.

The VAT cut to 13.5 per cent is a step in the right direction but EU directives do permit VAT as low as 5 per cent on condoms, as is the case in Britain. With condoms in Ireland remaining the dearest in Europe, this should be the next step towards safer sex and a reduction in the numbers pf sexually transmitted infections and crisis pregnancies. - Is mise,
