Sir, - In her response to an earlier letter Alison McDonald (October 5th) is completely missing the point when she claims that cyclists make no contribution towards the repair of our bike-breaking roads. The vast majority of adult Dublin cyclists are also paying Road Tax on the car they leave at home, and may not be using because of stress, or for the altruistic reason that they should not be driving alone and thereby contributing to the city's congestion.

As such, they may pay far more Road Tax per mile, and get nothing in return except bills for broken axles and buckled wheels.

Come on, Alison, get on a bike. - Yours, etc.,

Keith Malcolm, Leopardstown Grove, Blackrock, Co Dublin.
