A chara, – I am 82, suffer from sore feet and arthritis and cannot walk very well, but I am able to cycle, and have been cycling on the footpaths here in Adare since 1936 without colliding with anyone.
While cycling on the street I have been knocked down by motorists three times over the past 20 years and there were other occasions when they bumped against me without knocking me over. I spent a week in hospital with concussion on one occasion, and I had to spend €263 on repairs to my bike on another occasion and without ever receiving a penny in compensation.
The bike is my only means of transport.
If I could not cycle on the footpath, I would have to negotiate the heavy traffic on the main street. I do not relish that prospect. – Is mise,
