DAVID MAHER,
Sir, - On my daily train journey home from Dublin, I read Frank Bannister's letter of February 12th and decided to carry out my own little survey.
Of 45 parked cars that I passed on my cycle home from the train station, 34 were parked illegally on double yellow lines and footpaths. None, of course, had been given tickets. Though the route is a 30 m.p.h. zone, most cars travel at 45 m.p.h. and some much faster. My recollection is that all of the above are offences under the law.
While I doubt his assertion that motorists take the blame for cyclists' non-adherence to the law, pedestrians and cyclists most definitely feel the pain (and possibly far worse) for the lawlessness of motorists. The "until something is done", that Mr Bannister refers to is surely until the law is enforced - but there, unfortunately, lies the nub, and no doubt long into the future letters like Mr Bannister and my own will remain a feature of your page. - Yours, etc.,
DAVID MAHER,
