Madam, - I note that cyclists' groups are calling for the mandatory teaching of safe interaction between motorists and cyclists in driving instruction courses ( The Irish Times, November 4th). May I suggest that there is an equal requirement for cyclists to be instructed in the safe interaction between themselves and pedestrians.
My suggestion is prompted, inter alia,by the frequent sight of an elderly person cowering in a doorway to avoid being struck by some thug riding his or her bicycle in the middle of the pavement or the inability of pedestrians to cross safely at pedestrian crossings because cyclists ride through the red lights at speed.
Cyclists are easily the most inconsiderate of the various groups using our public roads. They seem to believe their virtuous use of a bicycle instead of a car entitles them to ignore the rules of the road. Mandatory re-education is urgently required. — Yours, etc,
