Sir, - John B. Gilmore (October 14th) may have a case when he points out the ease with which cycle-lanes have been introduced. But perhaps he could tell me why cyclists refuse to use them.
I am a bus driver, and much of my route is laid out in bus-lanes with accompanying cycle-lanes beside them. However, in peakhour traffic I am regularly slowed down, sometimes to virtual walking pace, by the naked refusal of cyclists to take their bikes up onto the lanes provided for them. On one occasion when I tried to pass a cyclist in the bus lane, he drew level with me at the next stop and spat into my cab.
Perhaps cyclists are not aware of this, but I believe it is illegal for them to use the roadway where a cycle-lane is provided. However, since they don't obey any other traffic law, why should they obey this one? - Yours, etc.,
David Smith, Harmonstown Road, Artane, Dublin 5.
