Dáil Éireann and the whip system

Sir, – When a person stands as a candidate for election as a member of a political party, he or she is representing themselves as the face of the party and promulgating its policies. The electorate, including myself, vote for that person not on account of his or her personal views but as a vote for that particular party. This is what party politics is all about. Should I wish to vote for a person on account of their personal views and beliefs, I would vote Independent. I say well done to Fine Gael for kicking out the rebels who have effectively misrepresented themselves to the electorate by not supporting their party. This is a serious misrepresentation on the part of those TDs and they should certainly consider their positions in the Oireachtas. – Yours, etc,

TIM BRACKEN,

Pope’s Quay, Cork.
