Sir, – I enjoyed Michael Harding's account of his visit to the Galway Film Fleadh (Summer Living, July 16th) and his description of his friend's part in a film involving dancing with a "fairy" in a dancehall scene. According to Michael, a fairy is his friend's description for a woman of less than seven stone. I wondered if this was correct. As it happens I spent last week at the Percy French Festival/Summer School in Castlecoote, Co Roscommon, and high on the list of matters considered was the song The Darlin' Girl from Clare, which starts, "We were sittin' on the wall upon a Sunday/To watch the girls go by,/ And thinkin' that we'd be marrit to one one day,/ When Kate Flynn caught our eye,/And man she was the makin' of a fairy,/And it made each boyo swear,/ 'There's not one girl in the wide, wide world/Like the girl from the County Clare!'" Presumably therefore Kate Flynn was only about six stone? – Yours, etc,
