Sir, – Séamus McKenna might be better advised to let future generations pass judgment on Angela Merkel (Letters, August 2nd).
While, on the surface her refugee policy seems admirable, she might have given her Schengen colleagues the courtesy of a consultation before her “We can do this” comment.
With increasing terrorist attacks in Europe and retaliatory attacks on, and resentment towards, migrants, it doesn’t take a genius to see that we could be witnessing the beginnings of a very vicious circle.
Given that the Brexit vote was facilitated by the refugee/migrant crisis, and now talk of similar referendums in other European Union countries, there may not be much of an EU left for him to be proud of by the time Ms Merkel leaves office.– Yours, etc
