DANGEROUS PEDESTRIANS

Sir, - It was with considerable bemusement that I read of Daragh Breathnach's annoyance (May 9th) at city streets being handed over more and more to cars and traffic at the expense of pedestrians who are forced "to race across the road as quickly as possible so as not to delay the polluting motorists too much".

Pray, where are these law-abiding pedestrians? I cycle 16 miles daily through and around the city centre and am confronted with pedestrians who do anything but race across the road. Some regular occurrences are:

1. Pedestrians who turn their ample buttocks to oncoming traffic as they saunter across the road.

2 . Young children in buggies being projected in front of oncoming traffic as an insurance ploy to ensure that the person in control of same can waddle blithely through lines of traffic.

3. Pedestrians who wear Walkmans just in case they might be aware of what is going on around them!

The next time Mr Breathnach decides to "reclaim the streets", perhaps he might consider equipping himself with a brush and other cleaning equipment to reclean them en route. Now that I would appreciate! - Yours, etc.,
