Sir, – Reading about Fionnuala Ward's solo rendition of Danny Boy at a school in Japan (An Irishwoman's Diary, February 16th), my thoughts turned to my own contribution to Sr Philip's school choir in Belmullet, Co Mayo, in the early 1960s.
I watched the poor nun’s upset at the discordant notes emanating from my direction.
I noticed her focus intently to identify the source, at which point I switched to miming.
All being well again, I saw her gradually relax and enjoy the harmonious whole.

To my eternal shame, this sequence was repeated many times before I eventually did the decent thing and withdrew from the school choir, taking Sr Philip out of her misery. – Yours, etc,
