Sir, - Have we all gone mad? We had one tax amnesty (a last chance) and then another tax amnesty (a last, last chance) when our politicians bent over backwards to accommodate the criminals who rob from the public purse.
Now the Revenue have announced that the tax cheats who brazened out the first two amnesties are to get a last, last, last chance. We were promised that anyone who didn't own up in 1992 would get a mandatory prison sentence. But now, if they pay up before November 15th there will be no prosecutions and no publication. Interest and penalties will be capped at a level that is less than the normal penalties alone.
Can you imagine any other crime where the criminal would be promised immunity from prosecution in return for paying less than what they owe? The Irish Times calmly reports that there is all-party support for the measure. It's me who's mad - I pay my taxes! - Yours, etc.,
