Madam, - The late Peter Kavanagh devoted much of his life to encouraging and supporting his renowned brother, Patrick, as John Waters observes (Opinion, February 6th).
Peter was also a gifted and dedicated teacher. I had the privilege of being taught by him at Westland Row School and retain the happiest memories of his rare teaching qualities. Our classroom was situated in the basement of the school, away from the main seat of authority.
Patrick regularly visited the basement to speak to us about poetry and kindred subjects. These visits were always enjoyable and sometimes hilarious.
It was a most pleasant and delightful year - the only time I received any genuine education. I feel sorry for the youngsters of today who are being so frightfully well "educated" but are having such a deadly dull time. - Yours, etc,
GEORGE COUGHLAN, Galtymore Road, Dublin 12.
