Sir, – Last Thursday, the Department of Health announced that 52 people had died as a result of Covid in the Republic during August.
This represented a significant increase in the numbers for June and July, both of which recorded 16 deaths. The announcement came hot on the heels of the unveiling of the Government’s plans for removing public health restrictions and letting us get back to the way things used to be.
Just imagine if, instead of the Department of Health, the Road Safety Authority had announced that 52 people had died on our roads in August, on top of the 16 deaths in both June and July.
I wonder if our Government would have announced it was scrapping the penalty points system, abolishing speed limits and giving drivers the green light to drink as much alcohol as they wanted before driving.
In a way, getting back to the way things used to be.
– Yours, etc,
ROIBÉARD
