Sir, - Your Editorial of April 17th concerning the carnage on our roads is to be commended. However, while it emphasised the problems facing the Government, citizens, and victims alike, there were two glaring omissions: one is the moral responsibility of the motor industry, which continues to manufacture vehicles (and advertise them unchecked) that travel too fast for our nation's roads; and the second is the leniency and inconsistency of our courts when dealing with a wide variety of motor offences. Until these are addressed, the death toll will continue to rise.
When weighing up the prospect of losing the thousands of jobs, the tax revenue and the sponsorship that the motor industry currently provides, the Government probably believes that 400-500 road deaths is an acceptable level of carnage. - Yours, etc., Ronan Gallagher,
Inchicore,
