A chara, - It was with considerable bemusement that I read Jane Hayter-Hames's letter regarding abortion (October 7th). Her contention that one cannot have an informed opinion on abortion unless one has faced, experienced or performed an abortion is indeed puzzling.
I can only assume that Ms Hayter-Hames has forgotten that an estimated 30 million babies worldwide who have concrete experience of abortion annually are unable to articulate an opinion for obvious reasons. But I'm sure, if they culd, their opinions would be extremely interesting and guaranteed to imbue humility in all of us. - Yours, etc.
