Madam, - I agree with F.G. O'Faolain (March 4th) about the awful names chosen by housing developers for new estates. There are at least three named "Aylesbury" in north Cork alone.

Why not make use of the old townland names which usually have a history peculiar to that place? This would help to root the new estate in its surroundings.

For this reason I see no point in removing English place-names in Dublin. Conversely, if a name is Irish then it should remain so in maps and road-signs. What is the point of Barna/Bearna?
