Sir, - I have to laugh at the outrage, the righteous indignation expressed by the Government and various county councils over the illegal dumps in Wicklow and elsewhere.
There are simply tons of waste along the river Dodder from Pearse Bridge to Rathfarnham Shopping Centre for the past eight months and no one has done a thing about it. The banks of the river are teeming with every type of industrial and domestic waste imaginable.
The river is a sorry sight - burnt-out cars, electric cookers, fridge-freezers, gas canisters, panes of glass, and so on. It is choked, destroyed. The once beautiful riverside walks stink from human excrement. A paradise, a natural reserve, has been turned into a wasteland unfit for residents of the area to use.
There have not been any fines or punishments of any nature meted out to the perpetrators of this outrageous behaviour. A two- tiered legal system, indeed. - Yours, etc.,
Ena Keye, Wasdale Park, Dublin 6.
