Defence Forces equipment

Sir, - Joe Murray questions the necessity of the Irish Defence Forces purchasing light infantry tactical vehicles

Sir, - Joe Murray questions the necessity of the Irish Defence Forces purchasing light infantry tactical vehicles. His ignorance of today's volatile post-Cold War climate is astounding. It is true that for over 40 years the Defence Forces have served with great distinction in peacekeeping operations all over the world. However, the peacekeeping operations today are far more complex and demanding than previous ones.

The reason our Defence Forces are "arming as never before" is because they are being faced with more dangerous situations. Improved military equipment, including light infantry tactical vehicles, are fundamental safeguards for our Defence Forces if they are to continue their long and distinguished role in international peacekeeping.

It is time for the idealistic Mr Murray to realise that war and conflict are realities in today's world; and if Ireland is to play its part in maintaining, and occasionally enforcing, peace, our forces will need the tools to be able to do so. Without these necessary improvements in equipment, the spectre of Irish troops arriving home in body bags will become a horrifying reality. - Yours, etc.,
