Defined for life by social media?

Sir, – What a great article by Karlin Lillington ("Today's teenagers risk being defined for life by their posts on social media", January 14th). Those of us who grew up offline must safeguard our digital natives from this permanent search for validation and need to be digitally connected 24/7. It is our responsibility, as digital immigrants, to teach them self-confidence, to enjoy the moment without recording it, to experience spontaneity, to make decisions without the consensus of a committee, to relish the anonymity of being "off the radar", to commit to a previously agreed arrangement, to overcome the "fear of missing out" and to be truly independent. It is imperative for us to help them to disconnect occasionally and stop them being defined by their digital footprints. – Yours, etc,
