Madam, – The final sentence of Sarah Carey’s article (Opinion, February 3rd), that we “have a democracy, now”, may be a catchy soundbite, but it is also disingenuous. The Irish people had no say in the disastrous bank guarantee of September 2008 which was the most important financial decision taken in the history of the State. Brian Lenihan and his advisers heaped massive banking debts on the Irish people without any consultation.

How is this democracy? Perhaps Ms Carey is confusing democracy with plutocracy? – Yours, etc,
