Denis O’Brien and Dáil privilege

Sir, – Denis O'Brien has taken exception (August 8th) to the decision by former Irish Times editor Geraldine Kennedy to destroy documents pertaining to the source of an article relating to the Mahon tribunal.

It is a bit rich of Mr O’Brien to cite concern about Mahon tribunal documents given the difficulty the Moriarty tribunal had with documents.

With regard to the decision to award the second mobile phone licence to Mr O’Brien, the Moriarty tribunal determined that at the crucial Copenhagen meeting, “ . . . there were no documents generated, or retained by the Department [of Transport, Energy and Communications], or retained by those who participated, recording what occurred at the sub-group meetings, or how decisions on the evaluation were made or progressed” (page 467, volume II). – Yours, etc,
