Sir, - While agreeing with Keith Harris (January 6th) that omitting the 35-65 age group from routine dental treatment is unjust. I must contradict his claim that "pain relief" equals extraction under the GMS scheme.
Emergency dental treatment for all age groups is carried out under a GMS "E" form. Items €1 and €2 refer to extractions.
Item €3 is entitled "Restoration to control pain" and entitles the claimant to a filling, if necessary. Item €4 refers to endodontic treatment. This item, commonly known as root canal treatment, is restricted to anterior teeth. Incidentally, this last restriction is also present in routine dental care for all age groups and not just in emergency treatment. - Yours, etc., Brendan Fanning,
Dental surgeon, Ballinalea, Ashford, Co Wicklow.
