Sir, - If politicians wonder why the public is cynical about them, they need only review their handling of the taxi licensing issue. Lacking the courage to do what the public demanded i.e. to deregulate, for fear of losing the votes of a powerful lobby group, they procrastinated until the courts provided them with a way off the hook. Now they can say to the taxi drivers that they have no choice! Cynical government breeds a cynical public. - Yours, etc.,
