Sir, - The taxi drivers of Dublin and the country have no support from the working public and have been treated with disrespect and disregard by most.
In most disputes people will at least look at each other's point of view, so in the interest of fair play, I would ask you to publish the reality of what is happening.
For over three years the taxi drivers have been trying to get the Government to talk at the table. Before this, we were in a taxi forum which allowed a certain number of taxis to come on line as agreed by all, which by now would have meant 750 extra taxis on the road.
For no reason, Bobby Molloy pulled out of the forum, stating that he was going to issue 3,100 plates to existing plate-holders. As a result the hackneys took a legal case.
Bobby Molloy is now hiding behind a decision by the courts, which in reality is asking - sorry, dictating - that "we the Government demand that you give up your pensions, work at least 20 hours extra for what could be 20 per cent less.".
Is there anyone out there that would agree to these conditions? I think not. - Yours, etc.,
Bernard McGowan, Clifden Court, Ellis Quay, Dublin 7.
