Sir, - "Deregulation" is not what Mr Molloy is attempting to introduce in the taxi industry. The only taxi "regulation" which he wishes to "deregulate" is the one which limits the number of taxis which may operate in a particular city or area. The effect of this will be to drive down taxi drivers' remuneration/wages to the lowest level possible. Hardly a surprising proposition from a PD minister.
Your readership should be aware that this industrial action is not about more taxis; it is about the tyranny of dictatorship. Taxi drivers will not allow themselves to be treated as second class citizens. If partnership and negotiation are good enough for all other sectors of society, then we demand nothing less. - Yours, etc.,
