Madam, - Sunday's breath of spring in the air prompted lunch in Dún Laoghaire followed by a walk on the East Pier. As the train pulled out of Killiney station, I was presented with a magnificent vista of the derelict remains of Homan's tea rooms. The lunch venue offered panoramic views of the Carlisle Pier on one hand and the Dún Laoghaire baths on the other. On walking the pier, my efforts were rewarded by the sight of the graffiti-covered bandstand and roofless public shelter, both liberally garnished with builders' mesh fencing. At the end of the pier, I was enlightened by the view of Blackrock Baths across the bay.
The south Co Dublin coastline is a major asset to Irish tourism. Most of the structures referred to above are in the control of the local authority. Surely we can do better than this. - Yours etc,
