Sir, – I was glad to see Frank McDonald’s article regarding Derry’s historic railway station (Home News, March 22nd).
During Derry’s year as the UK City of Culture, it is sad to see another of its important buildings neglected and at risk.
Other cities across Europe have renovated, and put back into use, buildings that formed part of their industrial and cultural heritage. Translink, which has responsibility for public transport, has a stated preference for a new station just metres away from the Victorian station pictured in your report.
This would mean that the Waterside area of Derry would have three train station buildings next to each other. If this makes sense to anyone on the island perhaps they could explain it. – Yours, etc,
MARTIN MELAUGH,
Coleraine,
Co Derry.
