Sir, - At some not-so-distant date I can imagine coming across a sign that reads:
"Somewhere beneath this golf course lie the scattered remains of Durrow Abbey, one of numerous religious establishments" that flourished in the Dark Ages."
It was an eye-opener for me to read Eileen Battersby's article in your edition of November 4th on the prospects for the "development" of this site as a glorified country club.
Perhaps those in favour of such a commercial enterprise could arrange for the crumbling 18th-century church, also inconveniently close to the proposed golf course, to "fall down", while the 9th-century high cross and early Christian grave-slabs are moved out of the way - into the safety of a store-room at the National Museum. - Yours, etc.,
Michael Bristow, Knockarlow, Clareen, Co Offaly.
