Sir, - What a pity the historic town of Drogheda does not have a town clerk with a little more sympathy for history and heritage. Where a responsible official such as Mr Brendan Hoey (April 2nd) shows his, and by inference the Corporation's, true colours with regard to the physical reminders of our past, the task of those who seek to preserve them is made much more difficult.

Perhaps the Duke Street site could not be preserved, even in part, for display, but the signs must be ominous for that ugly pile, the Magdalene Tower which occupies such a prominent site with development potential. Or indeed, for how long can the medieval St Lawrence's Gate be allowed to hinder a free flow of modern traffic in and out of the town? - Yours, etc.,
