Sir, - Could somebody please explain to me why the entire city of Dublin seems to be dug up at the moment? I have noticed for the past number of weeks that there is major disruption to the traffic flow caused by road works and it appears to be happening just about everywhere, both city and suburbs. Indeed, the footpaths have not escaped this frenzied digging craze and, in many situations, the pedestrian is forced to risk life and limb by walking out on the road. Then, when the road is eventually put back after all the digging, there are the most dangerous potholes and virtual craters left behind.

Apart from the huge inconvenience caused, the whole thing is an assault on the aesthetic sense. And the condition of the roads after this disruption is utterly deplorable. What the hell is going on? It is a completely new phenomenon and nobody seems to be sure precisely what it's all about. One thing is certain: the city of Dublin is in quite a sorry, ugly mess at the moment and it's only a matter of time before there's a serious road accident. It is also extremely dangerous for blind people. Can no one put a stop to it? - Yours, etc.,
