Madam, – The word “presently”, in the sense of “at this time” is not incorrectly used by Peter McIlwaine (March 8th). Its use for this purpose fell out of favour in literary circles several hundred years ago, but it survived in common usage and is presently making its way back into vogue as affectation becomes déclassé. As, apparently, is the use of the inverted comma, judging by Kevin Breen’s letter (March 9th). – Yours, etc,
